Welcome to the Rice University's Children's Campus Website

Welcome to the Rice Children's Campus website. Among the construction projects under way around and near Rice is one that has been discussed for nearly two decades and that will meet an important need for our community, namely a child care center. Starting this fall, the center, now being built just a block west of campus, will provide an additional option for meeting the child care needs of the campus community.

Rice has selected Metropolitan Montessori Schools to operate the center, which we are calling the Rice Children's Campus because of its 22-year history of successfully operating the downtown Cathedral House school, where it is known for offering excellent care to children while partnering with parents to create an environment dedicated to healthy child and family development. We are also pleased to announce that the children’s campus will work with Rice’s School Literacy and Culture Project to provide programming that emphasizes early literacy.

The children's campus will be a single-story, 9,743 square foot building located at 5504 Chaucer Drive. It is expected to serve up to 86 children from age newborn through 5 years old. For additional information, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions contained on this website. If you have a question that is not addressed in the FAQs, please send your question to childrenscampus@rice.edu and we will respond.

Also, please note that this project embodies Rice's commitment to sustainability, and we anticipate that the building will be certified as part of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. You may recall that the old houses at the site were carefully “deconstructed” and about 10,000 bricks from those buildings will be incorporated into the façade of the children’s campus, bringing a sense of continuity and history to this beautiful addition to that neighborhood. These are just some of the many environmentally friendly aspects of this project. Please visit the Construction Information Center on campus or the project's Web site at www.rice.edu/chaucer to learn more and for construction updates.

Warm regards,

David W. Leebron
President
